Over the lifespan of a site, individual pages can be changed / updated a number of times by either the same user or by different users. The version control in UDo builds up and stores a library of the versions of each individual documents. Upon being checked back in by an author a new version is saved into this library, providing a useful backup. Occasionally it may be needed to revert back to an older version of a document to restore it or to trace changes in the document to individual users. Version control is then a full document record which archives all versions of each document, ensuring that information that may be useful to the organisation in the future is not lost.
In an environment where many different users, potentially in different locations and time zones, it is important that two users can not over write each others work by mistake. Therefore UDo incorporates a system of check in / check out, where content will be locked to a specific author while they are working on it and unlocked as soon as the check it back in.
UDo keeps a record of the different versions of a document assigning a minor version number each time a document is checked out / in and a major number upon being published.
Occasionally a user may delete content in error before checking a document back into the system or it may be decided that the content in an earlier version was of a better quality etc. In these instances it may be necessary to restore a previous version to the site or to use the a previous version as a basis for updating. In these instances the ability of the version control in UDo to "restore" or "roll back" to a previous version is essential.
